Lira City, UG: Joy and shock is perhaps the best oxymoron to describe the atmosphere at BarApwo primary school following the recent release of Primary Leaving Examinations results by Uganda National Examinations Board- UNEB.

In a country where parents prefer private over government schools because poor performance is synonymous with the latter, it is worth celebrating the amazing and excellent performance of pupils of Barawpo primary school in the 2023 PLE exams that saw many passing with flying colours in grade one.

A government aided Primary school, Barapwo PS is situated in Lira City West Division, Lira City along Lira University road, about 3kms from the city center.

Under the stewardship of an experienced, dedicated and education enthusiast Mr Boniface Omol as the head teacher, BarApwo beat a number of schools and registered 40 candidates in grade one, while the rest of the candidates passed in Division two,a record passing level that was never registered in the past.

This Outstanding academic performance has excited parents and candidates who could not hide their joy from this publication.

Speaking to this publication, Abubakar Okello, a parent of BarApwo primary school said he was extremely delighted with the good grades scored by the candidates adding that it is the first in the school's record to attain such promising results that has made all their students to qualify for the next academic level.

‘’I'm so impressed with the efforts put by the current head teacher and the entire staff, and I know it is not easy to produce good results like this’’ Okello commended the school.

Roselyn Ejang, a guardian to a candidate who passed in Division one said it was unbelievable that Barapwo being a public school could manage this top notch performance.

"When I heard that PLE results was out, I called the school to find out how my daughter had performed only to be greeted with good news that she was among those in Division one, I couldn't believe this and I remember shouting in ecstacy" Ejang disclosed.

We visited the school to have a touch with reality at the school and interacted with the head teacher Mr. Boniface Omol. According to Mr. Omol last year's PLE results showed significant improvement compared to the previous years and attributed it to a collective and multi-pronged efforts and approach by all the stake holders.

Without delving into details, Mr. Omol said they employed a number of mechanisms to ensure they improve on the performance of the pupils which among others included coordination meetings, exposure visits and New learning approaches that ensured broad based knowledge gain by the pupils

Smartly tacked in and clad on his court,a visibly organized Omol beaming with smiles at his office on Friday 2nd February 2024, lauded his teachers, the school management committee and parents whose immense efforts and contribution ensured the school emerge victorious in the PLE results.

A total of 749,254 candidates from 15,859 centers (schools) registered for PLE in 2023 compared to 832,654 in 2022. Of this number, 501,602 (66.9%) from 11,365 centers were Universal Primary Education (UPE) beneficiaries, and 247,652 (33.1) of the candidates were Non UPE.
