Panic as Ex - UPDF Major (RTD) Opio Declares interest For Erute North MP seat a head of 2026
Before entering politics, Rtd Major Emmanuel Opio was deeply engaged in community development, particularly in education and agriculture. Now, he has declared his intention to run for a parliamentary seat and has played a significant role in advancing education in Lira District. He founded a school aimed at providing affordable education for children from low-income families.
In an interview over the weekend, the parliamentary candidate expressed his desire to improve the lives of his constituents. He highlighted the need for financial inclusion for people with disabilities, believing that it would empower them to participate in productive businesses, and he aims to lead this developmental effort.
The former militant also pointed out that social capital is crucial for development, a principle that has guided our ancestors in promoting democracy. He plans to launch wealth creation initiatives in his community, such as encouraging coffee cultivation and other profitable cash crops to support local sustainability.
Major (rtd) Opio was a dedicated soldier who fought valiantly to restore peace in Uganda, known as the Pearl of Africa. If given the opportunity in Parliament, Opio promises to be a savior for the people of Erute North, helping them break free from their struggles in their own homeland.

Maj (Rtd) Emmy Opio is a resident of Agweng town council in Erute North. During his time in the military, he held several important positions, including Senior Intelligence Officer with CMI and Assistant Private Secretary to the President, where he worked on the Operations of the Statehouse Anti-Corruption Unit with Colonel Nakalema, demonstrating a high level of professionalism. Maj (Rtd) Opio is contesting under NRM Party
His Vision
Maj (Rtd) Opio aims to enhance the wealth of the Lango region by promoting the cultivation of coffee and cocoa. In terms of education, he has plans to improve the educational sector in Erute North by advocating for support from the government and NGOs, ensuring that local schools can compete with the top-performing schools in the country. Additionally, he intends to establish a secondary school to fill the current educational gap and ensure children from the poor family background access education.
His school Agweng Parents School is a leading primary school in Lira District.
He also plans to provide support to churches in Erute North.
