Lira City ! Awor Agweri Declares Exit from Local Gov't Politics For 2026 MP Battles
Lira, Uganda! Shara Awor Angweri, the current female worker councilor for Lira City, has declared decision not to run for re-election in 2026 in local governmentPoltics as councilor Instead, she plans to contest for the position of woman MP for Lira City.
Wearing the NRM Party's signature yellow, she told media on Wednesday at Lira Hotel, she will advocate for the residents of Lira City.
Awor emphasized the need for strong leadership in the city, which she believes she can provide.
As a hopeful MP, Awor is focused on addressing youth unemployment in Lira by pushing for improved opportunities. She also expressed her intention to participate in the NRM primaries to secure the party's nomination.
Daniel Okello, the speaker of Lira City West Division and a supporter of Awor, highlighted that young people are uniting behind her because she champions their interests.
He pledged to campaign throughout Lira City to gather support for her, criticizing the current leadership for neglecting youth development.
Currently, two candidates, including Gender Minister Betty Amongi Akena, have emerged to challenge the incumbent woman MP, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng. However, Dr. Aceng, a medic turned politician, recently stated that she remains unfazed by any challengers in the upcoming 2026 elections.
