KOLE , UGANDA; Effective school feeding programs have significantly contributed to improved outcomes in schools across Uganda. Not only do they enhance student performance, but they also increase attendance rates.

Skyland High School has initiated poultry projects to support these feeding programs. Launched during the first COVID-19 lockdown, these initiatives have shown remarkable success in both student health and academic performance.

In a recent interview, Moses Okello Okaka, the founder of Skyland High School, mentioned that these projects have alleviated the previously high costs of feeding students and have also boosted the school's income. As a result of this progress, Skyland High School in northern Uganda is now the only academic institution where students receive chicken meals every month.

David Opio Yung, the current headteacher, stated that around 80 chickens are prepared each month for both students and teachers, promoting better health. He noted that since the project's inception, it has helped the school remain stable, even during challenging times when student payments were delayed.

In addition to improving nutrition and school revenue, students are also being trained in poultry management skills, equipping them to earn a living even if their academic paths do not go as planned. Mr. Okaka emphasized that education extends beyond academics; some students may not  excel in class but can also find success through practical projects like this one.

According to Mr. Yung, Skyland High School has consistently ranked high in academic performance, with many students gaining admission to various universities. Besides the poultry initiatives, the school is also teaching students with business skills, with a student-managed canteen as an example.

Skyland High School, located in Agege Parish, Bala subcounty in Kole District, has been a leading educational institution in Northern Uganda since 2010, producing many successful individuals in the Lango subregion.

The school is regarded as a model school in Northern Uganda based on Christian faith.
