Lango: UPC's Jimmy Okwany, a strong hopeful for Ajuri in 2026 Election*

Alebtong, Uganda: The Uganda People's Congress (UPC), a resurgent party under Jimmy James Akena Obote, is considering strongly backing all candidates who pass the party primary elections. Mr. Jimmy Okwany, a renowned medical practitioner, has emerged as a UPC candidate to contest against the outspoken Member of Parliament for Ajuri, Denis Hamson Obua.
According to a report obtained by this publication, Mr. Okwany is currently conducting grassroots mobilization for the party and votes ahead of the forthcoming election.
Obua, whose political leadership started as a youth politician, is now facing four additional aspirants.
Speaking to this publication, Mr. Okwany said his political ambition is receiving overwhelming support from the community.
He said he wants to eliminate household poverty through wealth-creation projects such as offering grants to farmers, creating markets, and promoting modern agriculture.
With his strong foundation in health and education, the outspoken politician promised to deliver effective services in these sectors.
"Our students are not performing well, but through advocacy, teamwork, and connection, we can change the narrative," he added.
In the area of education, the MP hopeful disclosed his plan to ensure children enjoy affordable and quality education.
Geoffrey Poro of Awei Sub-county, Ajuri Constituency, welcomed the vibrant politician's move to contest.
"We are happy for our son and we are ready to give him all the support needed to ensure he wins the election," Poro stated.
Prominent and veteran politicians like Mzee Nasuru Ogwang of Amugu and UPC chairman of Adwir Sub-county are behind this vibrant UPC candidate in his political ambition to lead Ajuri Constituency.
Who is Okwany?
Okwany Jimmy hails from Omoro Sub-county, Uganda, and was born in 1981.
Educational Background:
He sat for his PLE at Amugu P.7 School in Amugu Sub-county. He studied his O-levels at Omoro SS and Lira Town College, and his A-levels at Kololo Secondary School. After successfully passing advanced level, the vibrant politician joined Gulu College of Health Sciences, where he obtained a diploma in medicine. Subsequently, he pursued a degree in medical education at Makerere University, graduating in January 2018.
Currently, the hopeful Ajuri leader is completing his Master's in Health Services Research at the School of Public Health, Makerere University.
Work and Leadership Experience:
His leadership journey began during high school. While at school, Okwany held various leadership roles and inspired many students to become successful.
Professionally, he served as a Program Officer at the Carter Center, spearheading initiatives on Neglected Tropical Diseases, and later as a Program Officer and Team Lead at the Malaria Consortium.
Transitioning into the corporate sector, he served as a Case Manager at UAP Insurance Company, overseeing medical affairs.
In 2018, he was employed as the Academic Registrar at Mildmay Uganda and subsequently as the Acting Principal of the School of Clinical Medicine.
