Kampala, Uganda|As 2026 general elections nears, a new pressure group called ‘Uganda for Museveni’ has started grass root mobilization to drum up support for President Yoweri Museveni’s reelection in 2026.

The pressure group formally known as Buganda wa Museveni was launched on May 09 05, 2024 at State House in an event presided over by President Museveni.

The pressure group was initially meant to consolidate the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party and President Museveni’s support in Buganda region, where the NRM lost most of the parliamentary seat to the main opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP) in the general election of 2021.

But the name of the pressure group has now been changed to Uganda for Museveni and will now carryout mobilizations countrywide to draw support for the president.

This group is working independently of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party organs and its structures.

Ms Madinah Zalwango, the secretary of Uganda for Museveni’s pressure group said their set target is to ensure that Museveni wins the 2026 elections.

“The activities we are doing are purely overseeing and making follow-ups on government programs at the grass roots because the campaigns have not yet started, but when the campaigns start, we shall move from door –door conversing votes for Museveni,”She said in a phone interview.

She added that “since it’s not an election period at the moment, we are doing ground work of trying to ascertain the government programs that were promised in the manifesto of the year 2021,”

Ms Zalwango says that as a team, they have changed their name from operating as Buganda Wa Museveni pressure group as commonly known to Uganda for Museveni such that they have representations of membership countrywide.

“At the moment what we are doing is to recruit regional, district, parish and village coordinators. And these should be young people who love the president, who are not in the NRM structures nor are they in the youth council,” Ms Zalwango said.

According to her, the emphasis on frequent grassroots interactions demonstrates the party’s commitment to address the challenges that people are facing.

“The mobilization is going on but at the moment the people that we have at the village level are choosing them to help us find out if the government programs like Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga are really getting to the people on ground,”she added.

In Buganda Region where the Uganda for Museveni’s pressure group was launched from, the group consists of 10 members per village with the patron making it 11, 78 coordinators per constituencies and 342 sub-county leaders among others.
