Lango Cultural Foundation nominates four candidates vying to succeed Wonyaci Mzee Yosam Odur Ebii
LIRA, UGANDA: Lango subregion is experiencing significant excitement as the leadership of Lango Cultural Foundation, led by Wonyaci Yosam Odur Ebii, who is set to retire in November, has nominated candidates for the position of Wonyaci.
On Friday, four candidates, all leaders from various clans, were nominated in Lira City.
During a media briefing, Rtd Col Dan Opito stated that after the nomination process concludes on Saturday, the candidates will be officially introduced to the people of Lango as they begin their campaigns.
He emphasized the importance of peace and unity among the candidates throughout the voting period.
Opito confirmed that all candidates have been thoroughly vetted and meet the necessary qualifications for the role of Wonyaci.
The candidates identified by Opito include Dr. Dan Okello from the Guna clan, Benjamin Okii from Okiibura, Dr. Richard Nam from Okiiamat, and Ambassador Dickson Ogwang Okul from the Palacol clan.
In discussing their candidacies, Benjamin Okii expressed his commitment to restoring the region's lost culture, while Ambassador Dickson Ogwang Okul highlighted his focus on promoting peace and unity. The election is projected to require over 100 million Ugandan Shillings to facilitate the process.
The election is set on 11th of October 2024 , however, recently, Minister of gender labor and social development gazetted Dr. Moses Micheal Odongo Okune as the new Paramount Chief effective November, a move facing resistance from clan leaders loyal to Yosam Odur Ebii l the current Paramount Chief of Lango of Lango Cultural Foundation.
